Are you a local landowner interested in learning how you can manage your farm for the benefit of nature?

We are organising a daytrip to visit two farms in the Elan Valley. A free hog roast will be provided for lunch.

This is an opportunity to visit two wonderful local examples of nature friendly farming models, focused on reducing stocking density and inputs, increasing biodiversity and carbon storage, whilst still running a financially viable farm. We hope to bring together local farmers/ landowners, discuss nature friendly and sustainable farming practices, and share learning.

Tony and Angela Davies farm at Henfron, the farm is a tenanted farm in The Elan Valley. Henfron has been in Tir Gofal, Glastir and Organic schemes, as well as many other research projects. The open unfenced hill has a hefted Welsh Mountain sheep flock, the fenced-in land is a mix of habitat land and woodland. Last year experimental work rewetting peatbogs with wool was completed. They also process Molinia grass into biochar which is used across the farm to improve yields, plant health and lock up carbon. The biochar and wildflower seeds collected from the meadows are also sold locally.

Sorcha Lewis farms Troedrhiwdraen Farm, which is located in the heart of the Elan Valley. An upland hill farm with a flock of traditional Elan Valley type hill-sheep, a smaller flock of Torddu and a small herd of cattle. Like many of the farms in the area it is tenanted and is all habitat land which has resulted from the present farming system, which has shaped a landscape that is highly designated with rare wildlife that depends on the farming systems in place. Which in turn benefits the farm business in many ways.

The farm has wonderful traditional hay meadows, she has adopted sustainable stocking densities, reduced inputs (including using bracken as bedding for stock and poultry, so they have no need for straw or hay), and she uses organic manure on meadows in low quantities.
