Natural Resources Wales' response to Save the Wye campaign

Natural Resources Wales' response to Save the Wye campaign

We have received a response from Natural Resources Wales (NRW), unsigned, on 25th March 2022, in relation to our current campaign which makes several asks of both NRW and Welsh Government.

Save the Wye Campaign

Radnorshire Wildlife Trust recently launched the second phase of our Save the Wye campaign, urging supporters to join us in asking Welsh Government and Natural Resources Wales (NRW) to fund and resource an action plan to save the River Wye.

What is Radnorshire Wildlife Trust asking for?

1. Introduce General Binding Rules (minimum standards) into the Agricultural (Wales) Act and fund a dedicated Natural Resources Wales enforcement and advice team to implement.

2. Issue a statement revoking Natural Resources Wales’ statement that Intensive Poultry Units are not linked to agricultural pollution in the River Wye in light of the clear evidence from Lancaster University that details the link.

3. Introduce the requirement for a full environmental permit for all Intensive Poultry Units (chicken and pig) within Special Area of Conservation rivers.

4. Issue a detailed and staged action plan to work with all parties, including UK Government and the Third Sector, across the Wye catchment (England and Wales) to action joint measures and mitigation to address all pollution on the river and set defined targets to reduce nutrient pollution with immediate and rapid effect.

5. Agree commitment from Welsh Government and Natural Resources Wales to actioning a water protection zone across the whole catchment.

Has NRW responded?

We have received a response from Natural Resources Wales (NRW), unsigned, on 25th March 2022, in relation to our current campaign which makes several asks of both NRW and Welsh Government. We thank NRW for this response and note that not all the requested actions fall directly to NRW to implement. However, we hope that the organisation can advocate and support these measures as much as it's powers and influence allow. See our correspondence with NRW to date, via the above links.

Is NRW's response good enough?

We're disappointed with this response. If you are too, please consider using our attached letter as a guide to respond to them, calling for greater ambition, clarity and a commitment to the plan to save the Wye.
