From Rare Plants to Rewilding: What’s Next for Pentwyn?

From Rare Plants to Rewilding: What’s Next for Pentwyn?

Sam Coppard

As the Wilder Pentwyn project nears completion, exciting plans are underway for a new phase focused on nature, food, and community connections.

Andy Shaw from the Rare British Plan Nursery has finished introducing a number of rare plants at Pentwyn for this year (including Globeflower, Wood bitter-vetch, Deptford pink, and Mountain pansies), but there will be further introductions carried out in 2026. Most recently, he added a lichen species to the site; Tree Lungwort. He attached the Tree Lungwort to three separate trees, all close to the river Lugg where there is high humidity that this species seems to favour.

CAT students

We're excited to be working with the Centre of Alternative Technology M.Arch Sustainable Architecture course at Pentwyn. The students were tasked with designing an outdoor engagement space. After a design was finalised with support from an engineering consultancy, the prefabrication was carried out, before then undergoing a week of construction at Pentwyn to build the main structure. The students will be returning in September to finish the roof and cladding. We can't wait to see the finished result and to utilise the space for future events!

We have successfully obtained permission for the wetland creation at Pentwyn. The contractor we have selected has just recently finished a similar job in the local area through our Wilder Lugg Project and will be carrying out the work at Pentwyn in September.

In addition, work has just been finished to replace the old asbestos roof on the barn at Pentwyn, making it a much more dry and usable space.

Radnorshire Wildlife Trust’s market garden tenant Lisa is looking for volunteers to help out on her 7-acre market garden at Pentwyn. It's a great way to share your love for horticulture, support local food production, build new social connections, and learn new skills or ideas for your own garden! If you're interested, get in touch with Lisa via: lovinglifesmagic@pm.me or 07971148531

Our current Pentwyn Project Officer will be moving on from Radnorshire Wildlife Trust in September, to pursue a career change into primary school teaching. She will be starting a position as a teaching assistant in September, with the aim to begin her PGCE teacher training the following year.

A message from Chloe: “I have loved working for Radnorshire Wildlife Trust on various projects over the past four and a half years. In particular, having most recently worked on the ‘Wilder Pentwyn Project’, I feel extremely lucky to have been a part of such an exciting and ambitious rewilding project, kickstarting the journey towards RWT’s 30-year vision for Pentwyn. A lot has been achieved over the past few years in terms of repaying the loan, implementing a low-level extensive grazing system, carrying out vital monitoring and habitat work, and building community connections. I know that I am leaving Pentwyn in the capable hands of the RWT team, our very self-propelled Pentwyn volunteers, and the continued, kind support that we receive from funders like yourself, who enable RWT to forge ahead with delivering the vision for Pentwyn. I look forward to seeing how Wilder Pentwyn Farm continues to progress in future.”

As the two-year Heritage Lottery funded ‘Wilder Pentwyn’ project is finishing at the end of October, Radnorshire Wildlife Trust are looking towards the next steps at Pentwyn Farm. A funding application is underway for a three-year project, focusing on connecting people with nature and with food. This is likely to involve continued volunteer opportunities, farm cluster trips, events, talks and workshops. Excitingly, dining events and a supper club will be established, with the aim of celebrating local food production.

A new Project Officer and Assistant Project Officer will be recruited once the next project begins, so keep an eye on the Radnorshire Wildlife Trust website if you are interested in applying for either of these positions.

If you are a local producer, and would like to chat about how you could be involved in the project, please get in touch via: info@rwtwales.org
