Putting Gilfach at the heart of our community

Thanks to generous support from members and supporters we have reached our target for the Gilfach upgrades.

While we eagerly anticipate the positive changes that this project will bring, it's important to note that substantial renovations and enhancements take time. The trust is committed to ensuring that every detail is considered and executed with precision to create a visitor centre that aligns seamlessly with our strategic goals.

Ongoing updates will be in our E-news when we have them, if you want to know more - please sign up to ensure you don't miss anything!

I love this place and will always visit when I am in the area. It just feels special.

It's a special place...

Gilfach Nature Reserve is a spectacular nature reserve tucked away in the Marteg Valley in the heart of rural Mid Wales. Gilfach was purchased by Radnorshire Wildlife Trust back in 1988, then the next few years were spent renovating the longhouse and barn; restoring the ancient field boundaries and developing a management plan that puts wildlife at its heart. Today, Gilfach remains our flagship nature reserve, visited by 12,000 people a year.

If you enjoy visiting Gilfach Nature Reserve now, please consider donating to protect it and allow others to continue to enjoy it in the future.

We are aiming to make improvements which will make the visitor centre warmer, more energy efficient and a more usable space for visitors, volunteers, and staff to enjoy! Also, this will help us to work towards achieving our target to become a net zero organisation by 2030, by reducing our own environmental and carbon footprint.

This will include works such as:

  • Solar panels to supply electricity
  • A ground source heat pump to replace the poorly energy efficient oil heater
  • Under-floor heating, to replace the radiator system and maximize efficient use of the ground source heat pump
  • Draft exclusion around windows and doorways
  • High energy efficiency LED lighting to replace poorly energy efficient lighting
  • Woodfibre insulation installed to the ceiling and beneath existing timber wall coverings
  • Traditional lime plastering to insulate stone walls

In addition, if we raise more than needed then we will purchase new equipment/ materials for the visitor centre, and we reserve the right to fund the project in ways we deem fit.

My first visit to this interesting reserve provided my first sighting of an Atlantic salmon leaping its way up to the spawning grounds. Magical.

Have passed the reserve many times, but until today have not been able to visit. Well now we have and what a gem! It has everything, flora and fauna in abundace. Trails well marked and plenty of seats dotted around for the weary.

We know that our contribution helps RWT continue to look after our local wild places, while educating local children such as ours about our incredibly rich natural history and our small place on the planet.
