About the event
Volunteers are very important for Radnorshire Wildlife Trust, and our Tuesday Volunteer Group (TVG) has been going for a long time. Both RWT and the TVG are always keen for new people to join.
We are excited to have a few open days as part of the NLCF (national lottery community fund) Awards for All, and the first event in the series will be focusing on hedge laying at Pentwyn Farm.
Hedge laying is a traditional countryside technique for managing hedges, leading to healthier, stock-proof boundaries and a thriving habitat for wildlife. A well-laid hedge provides shelter and nesting sites for birds, corridors for small mammals, and food sources for many animals, helping to boost biodiversity across the landscape. It also strengthens the hedge’s root system, reducing soil erosion and improving water retention, while acting as a natural windbreak to protect crops and livestock. Beyond its ecological benefits, hedge laying is an important craft in Radnorshire that helps preserve our rural heritage and maintain the character of the countryside. Regular laying rejuvenates older hedges, ensuring they remain vigorous and resilient for decades to come.
The open day will give anyone interested the chance to visit parts of the site that are not open to the public, meet our existing volunteers, learn what volunteering for RWT involves, and gain new skills in this sustainable land management practice.
