The Salmon have arrived at Gilfach

The Atlantic Salmon are back in the Marteg and making their way up the falls. Only a few coming up at the moment but a good start to the autumn run. This is an earlier start than in previous years (at least in my experience) but an old local character did assure me that they would be in the river now.
It's wonderful to think that these fish are returning to the river of their birth after spending several years thousands of miles away in the north atlantic.
Unlike the Pacific Salmon, some will make the journey back to sea, to return again next year, some will die from exhaustion and just a few will fall prey to the Gilfach otters.
