About the Reserve

Pwllpatti is part of the old bed of the River Wye. It floods in winter and attracts a large number of over-wintering wildfowl. The site is farmed by the tenant of the County Council and is grazed extensively in the summer months when there is no water and therefore no wildfowl on the site. The reserve is only viewable from the bird hide adjacent to the road. The Radnorshire Wildlife Trust has a management agreement with Powys County Council and the tenants of Pwllpatti Farm.

Wildlife of Interest

The Pwllpatti reserve's interest lies in the species of over-wintering wildfowl it attracts in the winter months. Probably the most spectacular of these are the Bewicks and Whooper Swans which are sometimes seen here in winter as well as the better known Mute Swan. Other birds of interest include Tufted Duck, Coot, Mallard, Teal, Widgeon and the occasional Pochard, Gadwall, Green Sandpiper and Water Pipit are among the more regular winter and passage visitors, Tree sparrows may often be seen in the hedgerows.

Directions

From Llyswen take the B4350 to Glasbury from the A470(T). Go along the road for about 3.5 miles, going through Boughrood Brest, a Woodland will come into veiw on your left, at the end of the woodland is Pwllpatti Farm. Some 200 yards further there is a layby on the right-hand side of the road where you can leave your car. The reserve is below the road to your right, towards the river.
