Exploring Gilfach

Thursday 9th July 2015

Radnorshire Wildlife Trust has received initial support from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for the Exploring Gilfach project.

The project aims to raise awareness of the fantastic natural and cultural heritage of the nature reserve to a wider range of people and improve its visitor facilities. Development funding of £29,200 has been awarded to help progress their plans to apply for a full grant at a later this year.

Thousands of people visit Gilfach each year but few know much about the wildlife for which it is nationally important or the cultural heritage of this upland farm that spans hundreds of years. The project will develop a variety of enjoyable activities that focus on the lichen, moss, fungi and insects of the reserve as well as offering training to develop the professional skills of young ecologists. With the help of people in local communities, historical information, photos and stories about Gilfach will be drawn together to present a picture of life on this upland farm through the ages.

Commenting on the award, Julian Jones, Director of RWT said “We’re delighted that the Heritage Lottery Fund has given us this support. Since purchasing Gilfach nearly 30 years ago, Radnorshire Wildlife Trust has sought to make it the best possible place for a variety of wildlife and to manage habitats for as many species as possible. We also see our role as allowing everyone to enjoy its natural wonders and this project should help us achieve that goal."

Richard Bellamy, Head of HLF in Wales, said“Gilfach Nature Reserve is rich in biodiversity and we are very excited to support this project. HLF have made a commitment to supporting more natural heritage projects and we know Radnorshire Wildlife Trust worked very hard on developing their application. Gilfach has the potential to help more people get involved and learn about hidden wildlife as well as protecting rare and protected species.”
