Look for the small, pink, pea-shaped flowers of Common restharrow on chalk and limestone grasslands, and in coastal areas, during summer.

Herb-robert is a low-growing plant, with small, pretty, pink flowers. Look for it in shady spots in woodland, hedgerows and coastal areas.
Local Wildlife Sites
From mystical ancient woodlands, quiet churchyards, bustling flower-rich roadsides, field-bordering hedgerows to tiny copses, Powys enjoys special, often unnoticed wild places where nature thrives.
Whether they are in the depths of the countryside or nestled in busy towns, these Local Wildlife Sites (LWS) are exceptional areas of land.
They are identified and selected locally by partnerships of local authorities (Powys County Council), nature conservation charities (The Wildlife Trusts), statutory agencies, ecologists and local nature experts including County Recorders.
They use robust, scientifically-determined criteria and detailed ecological surveys. Their selection is based on the most important, distinctive and threatened species and habitats within an international, national, regional and local context. This makes them some of our most valuable areas.

Grassland
Flower-rich grasslands, full of wildflowers such as orchids, snake's head fritillaries and bird's-foot trefoil support an abundance of insects, from bumblebees to butterflies.
Natterjack toad
The rare natterjack toad is found at just a few coastal locations, where it prefers shallow pools on sand dunes, heaths and marshes.
Brown argus
The brown argus favours open, chalk and limestone grasslands, but can also be spotted on coastal dunes, in woodland clearings and along disused railways.
Deep-water corals
The skeletons of deep-water corals form mounds that can support over 1,000 species of invertebrates and fish.
