Habitat Surveys

Our team has strong botanical survey skills and conduct Phase I and Extended Phase I Habitat surveys, National Vegetation Classification and Hedgerow Assessments to current guidance methodologies.

We can provide ecology surveys to support planning applications and inform the potential requirements for protected species surveys.

Protected Species and Wildlife Surveys

We provide protected species surveys and informative reports on their findings towards planning applications, management plans and other activities that could impact wildlife or the habitats concerned.

We undertake surveys for the following protected species:

Badger Marsh Fritillary butterfly
Barn owl Otter
Bats Reptiles
Birds (including breeding bird and ringing) Water vole
Great crested newt White-clawed crayfish

Timing: Surveying for protected species can be restricted by the time of year. We would always recommend considering protected species and ecological requirements as early on in your development plans as possible to prevent unnecessary or unexpected delays. Contact us to discuss your plans and the time scales that could be involved to provide adequate surveys.

Specialist Surveys

RWS have in-house expertise in invertebrate surveys and identification and can provide a wide range of aquatic and terrestrial invertebrate surveys using equipment and techniques suitable for the species and habitat.

We undertake Environment Agency standard kick sampling stream surveys using BMWP and RICT methodology, water quality scores and for monitoring requirements of the Water Framework Directive. We can also provide Common Standards Monitoring Guidelines for Invertebrate Monitoring and ISIS habitat protocols for evaluation analysis.

Our in-house ornithologist and BTO licensed bird ringer has expertise to provide a range of bird surveys, from breeding bird surveys, surveys for nesting Schedule 1 species, individual species monitoring, nest finding, to ringing projects.

Lower plants and fungi

We can provide expert knowledge to conduct surveys of mosses, lichen and fungi species. Our close associate is a leading national authority on lichens, fungi and non-vascular plants.

BREEAM and Code for Sustainable Homes

We have experience in conducting the ecological assessments (Ecology Credits and Category 9: Ecology) for BREEAM and Code for Sustainable Homes (CfSH) assessments. We can provide a report produced by a 'suitably qualified ecologist' covering all elements within the ecology assessment: Habitat calculations, advice on protecting and retaining ecological features and providing measure to enhance a site's overall biodiversity.

EducationRWS Consultancy Manager describing some of our work.

We have an extensive background in providing training courses in environmental and ecology themes, including species identification, ecology and management. We hold a number of identification and survey method courses through the year including BTEC and University supported short courses. We present talks on a formal and informal basis.

Please do contact us to discuss areas you may be interested in.

Land Management

We provide advice for biodiversity enhancements and long term management plans. Our staff have extensive conservation land management expertise as well as being able to draw on further expertise within the Wildlife Trust reserve management team.

GIS Mapping and Data Analysis

RWS has licensed MapInfo GIS software which is used to produce detailed maps of habitats, locate plots and points taken from hand-held GPS which allows us to provide GIS mapping, data analysis and management in combination with ecological surveys and environmental management.

We use our MapInfo system to produce supportive documents for a range of projects including planning applications and management plans, scaled maps and mapping of habitat surveys. GIS mapping can be used to provide area data of the land and habitat surveys.
