Winter Walking
Walking is a great way to experience the diverse landscapes of our reserves, from exposed hill tops to tumbling streams and sheltered woodlands. Our reserves are varied and located throughout the county.
The hide at Pwllpatti, near Glasbury- on -Wye overlooks the old bed of the River Wye. It floods in winter and attracts a large number of over-wintering wildfowl. Birds of interest include tufted duck, coot, mallard, teal, widgeon and the occasional pochard, gadwall, green sandpiper, bewick and mute swans. From there you could venture to another watery reserve such as Llanbwchllyn Lake or amble around Cwmbyddog to find your first primrose or snowdrop of the season.Further north you could walk through the woods at Cefn Cenarth. At this time of year with all the undergrowth clear and the oaks and ash without leaves the wood feels spacious. Bailey Einon another woodland walk where you can appreciate an array of lichens, mosses and liverworts.
Take a walk to the burial chamber at Gilfach and enjoy the views of the valley. Whether you seek solitude on the gorse-clad cwm at Tylcau Hill or follow the circular trail, there are always delights to be found when walking on our reserves. We'd love to hear from you and know what interesting things you have seen.
