Cwm Marteg newsletter (these open as a PDF)

The Cwm Marteg Newsletter is produced and distributed by Darylle with the vital help of various volunteers. It is currently funded by St Harmon Community Council's Bryn Titli Fund (previously Powys's PEP Fund) and is a mixture of community news and local wildlife news and information.

Look at the St Harmon website for more information about the area.

Events

Coming up in 2012...

Half term Thurs 16th Feb 2-4pm - wildplay for families in Pantydwr Hall (last time before it gets knocked down!)

The big Upper Wye Clean-Up - Thanks to everyone who has given permission for us to litter pick or done their stretch of the Marteg themselves. We've been helping the Wye and Usk Foundation and Tidy Towns Wales on their Upper Wye Clean Up - 45 bags worth and 47hours of volunteer work to date. The worst bit had silage wrap and string wrapped around trees and we collected 11 bags from there. But most of the river was pretty good!

Visit to Bwlch Cefn Llian on Sat Apr 28th at 8am  - a generously late dawn chorus walk with Julian Lovell and bring your wellies if you'd like to come and see what the digging and blocking works have created on this Forestry Commission site.

Surveying for lamprey, bullheads,  water voles and other river creatures - over the summer months

Hitting the Himalayan balsam - moving out of the Marteg catchment, we'll be gathering some volunteers to pull and bash at this invasive non-native plant invading the Wye and Ithon rivers.

September 8th/9th - celebrating wetlands with the Wildlife Trusts across the country. Based at Gilfach and Cwm Marteg.

Habitat enhancement in Marteg catchment

Autumn 2011 saw some wetland habitat enhancement work taking place at various places in Cwm Marteg as part of the project. Further work continues in 2012 with farmers fencing off stretches of rhos pasture and water vole stream habitat, and the Environment Agency doing some revetment work.
