We live in a former farmhouse at 1100' near Colva in eastern Radnorshire. In late May, redstarts nested in a woodpile just outside our kitchen window (see photo). For the final 3-4 days, the female stopped feeding, and spent all her time flitting around outside the nest, twittering continuously, presumably calling for the offspring to emerge. Meanwhile the male continued to bring food, which was fed to different youngsters that appeared in the entrance "tunnel". The youngsters seemed to be fully fledged, and eventually left the nest, we believe. Does anybody know whether this was normal parental behaviour? Or did we have a hard-hearted mother and a soft-hearted father?! - David Warren
