What is this? 3 Months, 3 Weeks ago
We spotted this large amount of webbing on a Silver Birch tree at Gilfach. It is about 25 cms wide and runs up the trunk for nearly 2 metres. There were no signs of insects behind or on it.

Does anyone know what has made it?

At last we have found out what this may be.
John Langmaid has suggested that it is silk webbing produced by the larvae of the micro-moth - Argyresthia goedartella to protect their pupation sites in the bark crevices. This beautiful moth feeds in the Birch catkins & then can be seen flying around the trees in June.
Cheers, P&G

Wow! Moths are amazing. I've never seen anything like that before. I shall have to keep my eyes open when I'm out and about. Do you have a piccy of this micro-moth?
